He was probably a little taller than that, if not by much. Below we find pictures of Stalin with US President Harry Truman and Sir Winston Churchill. Truman stood about 5′9″ and Churchill was about 5′6″ or 5′7″ so I would say Stalin can’t have been shorter than 5′5″.
It is funny how people become legendary figures and we assume the political strongmen of history must have, indeed, been strong men. Large, imposing, dangerous, when judged by the impressive statues and monuments they leave behind. In reality, a lot of them are physically rather unimpressive. Stalin was a pretty tiny, pretty slightly built man. His skin up close was heavily pockmarked and he wasn’t attractive, although as a young man he had been. His voice was shrill and high-pitched and he wasn’t a very good speaker.
And yet this guy, who no one on today’s Tinder would have “swiped” for, was one of the most powerful and destructive dictators in human history. You can look like a Georgian version of Super Mario and still conquer lands and end millions of lives, as long as the mind of a twisted Machiavellian sociopath dwells within that tiny body. And sadly for the world, it did.
