Who was the first human to die in space?

According to history the three Soviet cosmonauts Georgi Dobrovolski (left), Vladislav Volkov (right) and Viktor Patsayev (back) remain the only ones who lost their lives in space.


These cosmonauts died from the sudden opening of the premature cabin pressure equalization valve as their Soyuz 11 re-entry vehicle descended in 1971. Automatic systems retrieved their bodies after death occurred when exposure to vacuum lasted approximately ten minutes.

The crews of Apollo 1 and Soyuz 1 experienced tragic incidents that resulted in their deaths before the Soyuz 11 mission but none of these took place while they were in space. All astronauts perished in Challenger when it disintegrated during liftoff as well as in Columbia which failed during its descent to lower altitudes below the Karman boundary.
